JOB TITLE:     Health Room Assistants                     

REPORTS TO:      Building Administrators

 

GENERAL DUTIES SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the School Nurse, the Health Assistant is an integral member of the Health Office who will primarily provide direct care to our students who may be sick, injured, or in need of other medical support.

An employee in this position is expected to provide exceptional care to students. The Health Assistant will be scheduled to run the school health office during assigned hours with support from the school nurse. Due to the interpersonal nature of working with students, a positive attitude and warm personality are considered essential characteristics of a Health Assistant. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Medication administration;
  • Follow, implement, and model all safety, medical and health procedures;
  • Health screenings;
  • Maintain health room logs and  contact tracing logs;
  • Cleaning and sanitation of health room;
  • Review health protocols for the students attending school;
  • Maintaining isolation areas;
  • Communicate all urgent needs to school nurse and/or administration;
  • Data entry into the platform Synergy;
  • Confers with teachers, school nurse and staff to plan day-to-day routines, programs, and student-specific delegated healthcare;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Maintain accurate records and collect data;
  • Appropriately respond to and direct students;
  • Maintain confidentiality in all phases of work, i.e., records, meetings, parent rights, etc.;
  • Use computer technology proficiently;
  • Complete all district required training;
  • Complete additional medical training provided by district nurse;
  • Maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, parents and office staff.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency and attention to detail.
  • Employ good judgment in a variety of situations, including emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred knowledge of:
    • Medical record keeping management;
    • Medical terminology;
    • Basic medical procedures.
  • Current office practices, procedures, keyboarding and equipment;
  • Proficient use of computer technology;
  • Flexibility to meet needs and students and the health service program;

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be trained in First Aid
  • Preferred experience working in the health or medical field
  • High School diploma or equivalent

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • See near and far (i.e. constant observation of students)
  • Hear sufficiently to perform the duties and responsibilities (i.e. understand speech which may be difficult to understand, listening for distress signals)
  • Medium lifting occurs occasionally (20-50 lbs)
  • Lifting occurs frequently (0-20 lbs)
  • There is occasional light to medium carrying of supplies and equipment
  • Pulling/pushing occurs occasionally (i.e. wheelchair, vacuuming, open/close doors, gait trainer and stander)
  • Crawling, kneeling, climbing, cramped spaces and repeated bending occurs occasionally to frequently in the course of a day (i.e. toileting, loading bus, machinery control, working on same level as student, picking up trash, assisting a student in bathroom)
  • Balance upper body and hand/wrist movement occur often to frequent in the course of a day (i.e. assist with student balance, coordination in movement, writing, grabbing, keyboards, reaching, stretching)
  • Ability to chase children who run
  • Occasional use of household cleaning type chemicals (i.e. bleach)
  • Occasional use of glues
  • Constant exposure to blood and body fluids (i.e. spitting, feeding, changing, biting)
  • Exposure to bees, pollens, head lice may occur occasionally to frequently
  • Jobs in this classification are physically active positions that perform duties both inside and outside including exposure to inclement weather.  Noise level can be normal to high. Students may demonstrate uncontrollable anger and volatile behavior and may be extremely handicapped.  Employees are frequently to constantly exposed to blood and bodily fluids including but not limited to; spitting, feeding, changing, biting, body secretions (nasal, menstrual blood, feces, urine, etc.), testing blood sugar/ketones with a diabetic child or catheterized students.

 

EVALUATION

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Tigard-Tualatin School District 23J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter 51.

A new employee shall be allowed up to (4) four years experience on the salary schedule, based on actual years of experience on a job of like responsibilites and skills. The highest hourly rate for a new employee would be $22.09 per hour.
