JOB TITLE:  School Engagement Specialist

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Associate Principal-Student Affairs or Designee

 

FTE: 1.0 (8 hours per day) 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

 

START DATE: May 20, 2024

 

GENERAL DUTIES SUMMARY:

 

Employees in this classification will work as part of a team supporting student attendance and school success, and are responsible for helping high school students who have disengaged from the school community to return with the support to be successful. Primary responsibilities are to assist school intervention teams in re-engaging students who are full of promise but have not historically benefited from educational programs or systems; maintain a caseload of students and families; provide school reintegration services including collaboration with school staff to develop an individualized plan for each student; provide academic support, skill building, mentoring and other individualized and group supports; and help every student to leave high school with a definitive plan for the future and the resources needed to accomplish their plan.

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work as part of a team supporting student attendance and school success
  • Maintain a caseload of students and families with barriers/challenges to attendance and or who have disengaged from the school community or at risk of disengaging
  • Provide outreach to students (and their families)
  • Connect students and families to school and community resources
  • Provide school reintegration services such as mentoring, academics support, skill building and other individualized and group supports,
  • Collaborate with school staff to develop an individualized plan for each student;
  • Provide case coordination to ensure successful reentry of students served
  • Assist students in exploring and developing a post-secondary plan and connect them to the resources to accomplish this.
  • Collect data to track student and project progress
  • Other similar duties as assigned
  • Spanish Preferred

 

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, FUNCTIONS, AND CAPABILITIES

  • Significant experience with youth who may be experiencing challenges to attendance and school connection
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds in a supportive role.   
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, trauma-informed care and anti-oppressive practice.
  • Understanding of the role of racism and other systemic inequities in an individual’s life.
  • Comfortable working autonomously with a high degree of responsibility.
  • Genuinely enjoy working with young people.
  • Effective communicator and listener.
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of public school system or experience navigating post-secondary education.
  • Experience in creating successful partnerships between organizations or groups.
  • Spanish fluency preferred
  • People from historically underserved populations and/or lived experience of navigating poverty are highly encouraged to apply.

 

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by and employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Working at a computer station for possible extended periods of the day
  • Working in a variety of environments, including home visits to students and families served
  • Carrying 10-15 lbs. infrequently
  • Driving to various parts of the district, county and state

 

Paperwork is done in an office environment.  Traveling to meetings, family homes and sites is essential, some transporting of equipment and supplies is involved.  Some activities will take place during inclement weather.  Maintain a flexible work schedule that may include some evenings and weekends.

EVALUATION

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Tigard-Tualatin School District 23J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter 51.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a ten month assignment on the K range of the Classified Job Schedule.  The assignment of the step will be in compliance with the current Collective Bargaining agreement and range of pay is located in the current Classified Salary Schedule.
